Do you have a thoughtful PLAN
in place that makes your rules clear
and provides you & your kids with
a clear path when mistakes happen?
Shari, Parent
"I was really worried about what my kids were doing online and didn't know where to start when it came to setting guidelines. Julie's help in that area was invaluable and I feel like we have a good plan in place and I'm glad I have someone to call if I need help in the future."

When we were growing up, our parents could sleep well when we were home, knowing that we weren't putting our safety at risk. The same can't be said today. Kids are often NOT safe when they're home because they're online communicating with people and in ways that CAN put their safety (& future) in question. Parents not only need to know where their kids are physically, but now you need to know where your kids are virtually. And with new apps coming out all the time, your kids always seem one step ahead.
Your kids want to use technology, but it's hard to figure out what you need to do to keep them safe, not go nuclear when they make a mistake (and they will make mistakes), and stay consistent with your rules. We often deal with tech issues that affect our kids "in the moment" without thinking about HOW we are going to actually carry out the consequences for misuse when we're scared, angry, or frustrated.
You no doubt have some ideas about how to talk to your kids about drugs, alcohol, and sex. Why?
Those were topics you had to learn about from your parents (or other adults) as your grew up. You were taught what your family's values and rules were around all those topics.
The tech your kids are using wasn't around when you were their age, so it's hard to figure out what the "rules" ought to be.
As parents, it's much easier to say "no" than it is to say "yes" to things we don't fully understand and perhaps fear. Part of working with me on developing a personalized family tech plan involves helping you figure out ways to say "yes" to tech that make YOU comfortable. It's YOUR job as a parent to teach your kids how to use it safely, and if your go-to is "no", you're not allowing them to learn.
Get the tools and training you need PLUS ongoing support to make sure that you have a REALISTIC plan in place that actually works for family, rather than idealistic goals you read or heard about in the media.
Your family is unique and your Family Tech Plan need to be structured for success. If it's not going to work for YOUR family then it's a waste of time and money.
Additionally, as your kids age, your plan needs to evolve and with the support we offer clients, you'll have a place to come for answers on how to evolve your plan, how to adjust it for special circumstances, and how to make sure that you're doing what you need to do to raise smart and empowered digital kids.
"We chose to work with Julie personally to help us make sure that we didn't miss anything when we were setting tech rules for our kids. Her questions from our sessions together made us think about things we wouldn't have otherwise considered. Thanks Julie!"

"I felt so out of my element when it came to figuring out my kids' tech stuff. I don't use technology very often and when I do, it's for work or to make a call. I'm not really on social media so I didn't understand what the big deal was. Working with Julie opened my eyes and now I feel much better about letting my kids be online."
maria, parent
"We opted for the DIY version of Julie's Tech Plan and it really worked for us. My husband and I sleep better knowing that we aren't trying to make a new rule every time one of our kids messes up online. We finally got a system that works for us."
Sarah, parent
I've worked with hundreds of families and spoken to tens of thousands of students, parents, and educators on staying safe online, setting boundaries for tech use, age-appropriate tech solutions, what to do if mistakes happen online, and much more.
Regardless of the option you choose, you'll have access to our private community of parents and students who are going through the same thing you are. Often it's those who are experiencing the same things you are that give you the best advice.
If you choose the Done for You option, you'll have regular private access to me and can email me anytime. If you choose the DIY option, you'll be able to ask me anything in our private forum or book a private call or meeting with me at a super discount.
Price obviously plays a role, but if you aren't going to actually do the work yourself, a DIY option isn't going to cut it. If you're looking for more of an a la carte menu, or have some questions, book a call with me to help you figure out what's best for you.
The short answer is YES! Like with all things when kids are growing up, they're learning, and (I speak as a former school teacher here), every kid makes mistakes as they learn. You child will at some point share something they shouldn't have, connect with someone they don't know, experience harassment or bullying online... the list is long. Knowing ahead of time HOW you're going to handle those mistakes along with your kids being clear on YOUR RULES goes a long way to easing the anxiety that comes from raising digital kids.
Even if you use the same devices and are on the same sites as your kids, chances are they're using them a bit differently than you.
It's easy to think that because you're "where" your kids are online, you know how to teach them to use it safely. The thing is, no one taught you, so you don't have a roadmap for instruction.
Your child's digital footprint is frankly too important to guess how to teach them to communicate in the digital world both safely and appropriately.
Their reality is that what they share as kids can affect them in the future - colleges consider applicants' social media "fair game" now in college admissions. Employers regularly use applicants' social media to screen prospective employees.
When you combine that with the fact that your kids need to learn how to use tech safely and know what's okay/not okay to share online and that it's up to YOU to teach them those rules, it's not a bad idea to have a clear roadmap for how to set those boundaries and guardrails your kids need so they learn all the lessons they need to learn while they're still at home and you still have some control over what they can and can't do with tech.
